When is Halloween?

Halloween on October 31 evolved from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of harvest and the beginning of the dark winter half of the year. Today it is most popular in the US, Canada, Ireland, and the UK, celebrated with costumes, trick-or-treating, carved pumpkins (jack-o'-lanterns), and horror-themed events. The holiday has spread globally, with Mexico's overlapping Día de los Muertos being a related but distinct tradition.
